Planning for an uncertain adventure

Hello everyone!

     Thanks for taking a moment to check out my AFS blog. As you may or may not know I have been dreaming of and working toward studying abroad with AFS for the last seven years. I have applied to and been accepted to the year-long program with a potential departure date of August 14th. 

     Covid-19 has made ALL future plans more uncertain, but as of right now AFS Sweden, AFS USA, and I are all proceeding with caution and optimism. Two things are clear: 1) I will be safe if and when I travel and 2) if my trip is delayed all of the money I have saved and invested will be used for a future year abroad or fully refunded. 

     While in Sweden I will live with a volunteer host family (I don't know where or who I'll live with yet!), I'll attend gymnasiet, the Swedish equivalent of high school, learn Swedish, make friends and life-lasting relationships, and probably eat a lot of fish. 

     In this new age, I think it is more important than ever to make and maintain global relationships and share perspectives. I hope to learn a lot while in Sweden (especially about the environment and ways to protect the Earth we share) and also teach (how it is to live in a diverse place and work toward anti-racism). I know that this experience will help me grow in ways I don't even know yet! I am looking forward to being independent, managing my own travel, finances, time, and doing a lot of biking! Oh, and swimming. Did you know there are nearly as many lakes in Sweden as there are people?

     To reach my goal I have been working and saving, I have gotten generous contributions, and also a scholarship. But I am still thousands of dollars away from meeting my goal. I plan to continue working (and saving) but also asking for donations.
